POKOTABI / Tombo
とんぼ
This Tabata izakaya serves sashimi and grilled fish alongside dishes such as fish-ball soup, amberjack and sake-steamed clams. There are also grilled rice balls and sake.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
When a diner ordered grilled fish at Tombo, they were asked if they would like some white rice with it. That simple suggestion feels just right for the restaurant’s fish dishes. One visitor remembered the salted grilled Pacific saury and the suggestion to pair it with rice. The grilled and simmered fish selection includes alfonsino, black cod, horse mackerel and amberjack; sashimi choices include horse mackerel, bonito and spear squid. There is also an assorted sashimi platter, making it easy to try a few kinds of fish over dinner.
Among the other dishes, one diner described the fish-ball soup as “the best”. The menu also includes namerō, a minced fish dish seasoned with miso, sanga-yaki and agedashi tofu. Visitors have mentioned amberjack and clams steamed in sake as well—good additions to a meal centred on fish. The grilled rice ball contains bonito flakes and was described as lightly toasted. It makes a modest rice dish to round off a meal of seafood and drinking snacks.
Drinks include sake by the one-go serving, bottled beers such as Asahi Super Dry and Sapporo Yebisu, and fresh lemon chūhai. One customer noted that the beer was bottled rather than draft, which is useful to know if you order one. This is an izakaya for a leisurely meal of fish and drinks, or for a group to share several dishes over dinner.
